Biography

Born in Fort Lewis, Tacoma, Washington State in the United States. Son of US Army Lt. Colonel Robert William Mathewson, Sr. (Retired in 1990, of Medina, NY and originally Buffalo, NY) and Elizabeth Ryan Mathewson (nee Elizabeth Howard Ryan of Lynchburg, VA). My father is the son of James Mathewson of Medina, New York b. 1902, and Geri (Gietla) Herschezen Mathewson b. 1910/1911, originally of Breslau (now Wroclaw, Poland) and later of Warsaw, Poland, born in 1940. My father attended Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, near Lynchburg, where he met my mother at a church pool party. My mother Elizabeth Ryan Mathewson (nee Elizabeth Howard Ryan), born 1943, was the daughter of State Department Official Christopher Wynfree Ryan b. 1898 and Architect/Interior Designer Nan Howard Ryan b. 1902, both of Lynchburg, Virginia, who had lived in Israel and Turkey for five years as a child and later attended Randolph Macon Womens College in Lynchburg.

I lived with my parents, brothers (Robert William Mathewson, Jr. b. 1968 in Wichita, Oklahoma, Daniel Ryan Mathewson b. 1975 in Izmir, Turkey) and sister (Katherine Howard Mathewson b. 1965 also in Ft. Lewis, Tacoma, Washington) in Tacoma until 1980 when my father was stationed in Heidelberg, Germany. Lived at Patrick Henry Village in Heidelberg, Baden-Wurttemburg, Germany, from 1980 - 1983 when my family moved to Oberuersel, Germany to join my father who had been stationed near Frankfurt - am - Main, Hesse, Germany.

In 1985, my father was stationed at Harry Diamond Laboratories in Maryland, U.S.A., so the family relocated first to Gaithersburg, Maryland and later to Bowie, Maryland while my eldest sister , attended the University of Maryland at College Park. My oldest brother Robert William Mathewson, Jr. attended Bowie High School for his senior year of 1985-1986 and later the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD from 1988 - 1992.

My brother Daniel Ryan Mathewson and I attended first Kenilworth Elementary School (myself for grades 2nd - 6th), then Benjamin Tasker Middle School (me for grade 7), and my brother later attended Bowie High School until February 1991 when my brother Daniel Ryan Mathewson and I relocated with our parents to Plano, Texas. My father had retired the previous year and gone to work for MCI in Tyson's Corner, Virginia. Later in 1990, they relocated their R & D Department to Richardson, Texas, where my father temporarily relocated while my mother sold our house in Maryland.

In Plano, I attended Amie E. Wilson Middle School for grades 7 and 8, then in 1992 I attended W. A. Vines High School in Plano for grades 9 and 10. My brother had also attended Vines High School while I was at Wilson Middle School, moving on to Plano Senior High for his 11th and 12th grades. I attended Vines High School until the end of my Sophomore (10th grade) year. Since my parents had built a new house in Richardson, to the southeast of Plano, I could not attend Plano Senior High, I had to attend Plano East Senior High for grades 11 and 12. I graduated in May 1996.

From August 1996 to December 2001 I attended the University of Texas at Arlington, studying Architecture and minoring in German, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Architecture in December 2001, during which I studied abroad in Italy (Rome, Florence & Verona, as well as visiting England, France, Switzerland, the Vatican, Austria and Germany) in 2000. In December 2001 I left Texas to travel in Europe (Germany, Austria, France, Spain and Andorra) until March 2002 when I moved to New York.

In New York I worked as an intern architect and later junior architect on high-end, single family housing, conservation projects and commercial projects in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. In September 2004 I left New York to study urban design at the Architectural Association School of Architecture (AA) in London, U.K. I studied at the AA from 2004 until 2005, when I completed my first masters degree in October, when I managed to find a job before returning to New York while my work permit and visa were sorted. During this time I worked for Ike Kligerman Barkley Architects, P.C. where I worked until my paperwork for U.K. immigration was finalized in February 2006, when I returned to London.

Since 2006 I have lived continuously in London, apart from a brief secondment to Manchester while I was working for AECOM, and have worked as an urban designer and planner for a few design and planning consultancies, including PLP Architecture, AECOM and Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, a Chicago-based, U.S. firm where I worked until recently. I currently teach urban design and planning at the University of Westminster (UoW) in London (where I obtained my second masters degree, in International Planning from 2009 - 2011) and undertake independent planning and urban design consultancy services through the Max Lock Centre at the UoW, for work currently in Africa.

I became a permanent resident of the U.K. in January 2011 and a British Citizen in August 2012 |(I remain a U.S. citizen), and I live in South London with my partner John Raphael Miminas (b. 1978), who is also and urban designer and an architect, and is originally from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and whose parents are both from Limnos, Greece.

My sister Katherine Mathewson DeLonge (Denton, MD, married to Steven DeLonge, two sons: Ryan James DeLonge b. 1996, and Nolan DeLonge b. 1998?). My older brother Robert William Mathewson, Jr., Lt. Commander, USNA, (Terveuren, Belgium formerly Virginia Beach, VA, married to Barbra Gile Mathewson, two children: Michael Alexander Mathewson, b. 1996, Faith Nicole Mathewson, b. 1999, both children of Robert and his former wife Melissa Anne Mathewson, nee Melissa Anne Miceli; and one stepdaughter Ashlyn Roberts b. 1999?, daughter of Barbra Gile Mathewson). My brother Daniel Ryan Mathewson is married to Lindsay Mathewson, and have one child together: Karter Mathewson, b. 2011, and two stepdaughters, children of Lindsay, Mackayla and McKenzie).

Through my father, I have cousins Scott Mathewson (b. 1986) and Dana Mathewson (b. 1992?), children of my father's brother, Dr. James Mathewson, M.D. of Flagstaff AZ, and Dr. Arlene Wong of La Jolla, CA.
