Biography

Wilber E. was born about 1879 in Bloomer, Michigan, the son of Alvah E. Mathewson and Eunice E. Sherman.

In 1900, Wilbur, 21, born in Michigan in April 1879, was a college student attending Valparaiso College / Northern Indiana Normal Scool, Valparaiso, Porter county, Indiana.[1]

Wilbur, 25, married Gertrude Dunlop, 25, on 27 July 1904 in Lake Linden, Houghton, Michigan. Gertrude was born about 1879 in Canada, the daughter of Roger Dunlop and Margaret Kirkpatrick. [2]

In 1910, the Mathewson family lived at 2407 Baylers Ave., St. Paul, Minnesota. The household included Wilber E. Mathewson, 31, born in Michigan, whose parents were b. Wisconsin, a salesman at a grocery store, who rented their house; his wife of five years, Gertrude E., 30, b. Canada, parents b. Ireland, who had immigrated to the US in 1880. It was the first marriage for both, and both could read and write; their two children: Douglas D., 4, b. Michigan; and Gertrude L., b. Minnesota.[3]

They lived at 1715 Stanton Place, Long Beach, California in 1918. On 12 September 1918, Wilber Eugene Mathewson registered for the WWI Draft in Long Beach. Wilber was 39, born on 8 April 1879 in the United States. He was a self-employed butcher at 608 E. 4th St., Long Beach. Wilber was tall, slender, with blue eyes and brown hair.[4]

In 1920, the Mathewson family lived at 1715 Stanton Place, Long Beach, California. All members of the household could read and write. The household included Wilbur E. Mathewson, 40, born in Michigan, whose father was b. Wisconsin, and his mother was b. Michigan. Wilbur was a meat cutter, employed at a butcher shop. He owned their house without a mortgage; his wife, Gertrude, 40, b. Canada, as was her father, and her mother was b. Ireland. Gertrude had immigrated to the US in 1881, and became a naturalized citizen in November 1904; their children, both in school: Douglas, 14, b. Michigan; and Gertrude L., 12. [5]

In 1930, the Mathewson family lived at 1715 Stanton Place, Long Beach, California. The household included Wilbur E. Mathewson, 45, born in Michigan, employed as a butcher at a meat market. He was not a veteran. Wilbur owned the house, valued at $5000. He had married at age 19; his wife, Gertrude E., 44, b. Canada, who had married at age 18; their daughter Gertrude L. Dahn, 22, b. Minnesota, who had married at 18; her husband, Walter H. Dahn, 25, b. Nebraska, a garage mechanic, and a WWI veteran. He married at age 21; and their son, Robert W. Dahn, 1, b. California. [6]

Wilber E. Mathewson was born on 8 April 1879 in Michigan. He died, aged 54, on 12 October 1933 in Long Beach, California, and is buried (near his wife Gertrude) in Rose Hills Memorial Park, Whittier, Los Angeles, California. [7]

Wilber E. Mathewson, born 8 April 1879 in Michigan, resided with his wife Gertrude at 1715 Stanton Place, Long Beach, California. He owned and operated a butcher shop. Wilbur was the son of Alvin (sic) Mathewson and Eunice Sherman. He had lived in California, 20 years, all that time in Long Beach. Wilbur died in his home on 12 October 1933, aged 54. The informant to his death was his wife Gertrude. Cause of death was “nephritis, chronic, due to arteriosclerotic kidney” of 2-3 years, contributed by hypertension and generalized arteriosclerosis. Wilbur was buried on 14 October 1933 at Rose Hills Memorial Park, Whittier, California[8][9]
