Biography

Ezekiel was born about 1820 to possibly Benjamin Mathis and Elizabeth Norris. He may have had at least 2 siblings: Charles and John.

He married on 26 Nov 1848 in Warren County to Mary Elizabeth Johnson (parents unknown). He was about 28 years old. They may have had at least 4 children together:

Research Notes

His surname is transcribed as Matthews in census records of 1850, 1860, and 1900, along with marriage records to his first wife. Surname of Mathis is used in the marriage record to his second wife and in 1870, 1880 and 1910 census records. His grave marker is inscribed with the name "Ezikiel Mathis", with no dates. His children appear to use both Mathis and Matthews as their surname.
