His surname is transcribed as Matthews in census records of 1850, 1860, and 1900, along with marriage records to his first wife. Surname of Mathis is used in the marriage record to his second wife and in 1870, 1880 and 1910 census records. His grave marker is inscribed with the name "Ezikiel Mathis", with no dates. His children appear to use both Mathis and Matthews as their surname.
