Aree Matlock was born on 13 Jul 1881 in Nacogdoches, Texas, United States, son of Henry Pickens Matlock (1849 - 1925) and Lucy Amanda (Vardeman) Matlock (1859 - 1921).
His siblings were:
- Lewis David Matlock (1875 - 1958)
- John Elbert Matlock (1883 - 1961)
- Rose Ella (Matlock) Clifton (~1886 - ~1910)
Being tired of having to spell his unique name, he adopted the initials "R. E." that sounded like his name; and thus, the name "Robert Earl" was assumed.
In 1903, he married Aulener Durrett in Nacogdoches County, Texas.
Aree died on 26 Oct 1956 in Nacogdoches aged 75.
