Biography

Isham Esau Matlock was a soldier in the War of 1812. He enlisted in Carter Co. TN, and served from Oct 18, 1813 to Jan 18, 1814 as a Private in Capt Jesse Cole's Company of Tennessee Militia. He also served as a Corporal in Capt. Henry Hunter's Company. He was wounded in the war and sustained a spinal injury that did not permit him to walk or stand erect for the rest of his life. Despite his injury, he hauled freight from Cuba to Dillion, Missouri at one time. Isham and Nancy lived with their son Jesse in 1870. Most of their children and families emigrated by ox cart from Tennessee to Missouri. Nancy did not want to make the arduous trip to Missouri in an ox cart. Isham bought her a clock as an inducement and she made the trip. [1]
