Unfortunately this profile is not accurate. It is a classic example of trying to join unrelated families into one. The John Matlock listed above was born in 1838 in Nottinghamshire, England, and was assumed by someone to be John Matlock or Mallock who was listed as a passenger on the ship "Griffin" which brought Quakers from England to found a Quaker colony (Fenwick Colony) in West Jersey in 1675, and to also be the John Matlock who resided in New Kent County, Virginia in the early 1700's. To begin with the passenger list was not really a passenger list as the person who transcribed it admits, some of the persons listed actually emigrated before and after the "Griffin" sailed. Also if the transcriber could read the list clearly, why would he need to state that Matlock could also be Mallock. If the transcriber could not see a crossed T the L's could actually have been the upper loops of D's. After much effort, no evidence could be found that the John Matlock from Cropwell-Bishop ever moved to London, became a Quaker, or emigrated to America. Likewise, no evidence has been found that the "Griffin" ever sailed to Virginia. This ship was specificaly chartered by the Quaker, John Fenwick to bring Quakers to West Jersey. Getting back to the John listed in the roster, in a letter written by Joseph Wade, a passenger on the Griffin, in June 1676 to his wife Lydia in England, Wade mentions a man named John Meadock. According to an historical articall found in New Jersey Archives, Vol. XXI, this John, who was an early investor in the Fenwick Colony, was a chandler in London, but did NOT emigrate aboard the "Griffin" in 1675 like a number of others on the passenger roster. He came in 1678 and received his 10 acre tract of land in 1679. His actual name was not Matlock, but Maddock. He too was born in 1638, but in Cheshire, England, and was the son of Ralph Maddock. He married Elizabeth, the Widow of Joseph Durham in 1669 in London, and they only had one daughter, Elizabeth. John Maddox died in Salem, West Jersey in 1700. His will and probate are on record. I believe the transcriber took it upon himself to assume the hard to read name was Matlock because he new of the William Matlock Quaker family residing in what is now Camden County, New Jersey, who had an older brother named John. Aside from the distinct possibility that John Mallock is actually John Maddock, and, since this John Maddock died in 1700, he cannot be the John Medlock who was residing in New Kent County, Virginia. This profile appears to rely too much on conjecture
