Wilfred was born in Shirley a part of Southampton in May 1901, (2 months after the 1901 census) the only child of Jessie Saunders who was the second wife of Francis Maton, but he had 3 Half Sisters Elsie Amelia and Dora from Francis's first marriage to Fanny Emily Elder. Unfortunately by the end of the year he lost his sister Elsie who died in December.

He was Baptized in Cowes on the Isle of Wight, I believe a member of the family was Head Gardener at Osborne House more research required
The next official record of Wilfred is the 1911 Census and the family have moved from 161 to 208 Shirley Rd

Wilfred was too young for the First World War so we move on to 1922 and Wilfred meets his future Wife Olive Mary Springett as we can see by this Marriage Licence. At the time Wilfred was living at 118 Paynes Rd Freemantle, Southampton but still working in the family business as a Cycle Agent just a short walk away.

Wilfred and Olive got Married at The Parish Church of St James Shirley and the following year they had their only child Phylis Mary Maton they must have moved back to the family home at 208 Shirley Rd by this time. Sometime in the next 17 years Wilfred, Olive and Phylis moved to Bournemouth to live. He was too Old to be called up for The Second World War but he was in the Home Guard, He was working as a Manufacturers Representative as he put it or as we say now a traveling salesman, In 1948 Phylis married Joeseph Rice and he moved into the family home at Foxeholes Rd, 4 years later Phylis and Joe had a son Geoffrey and Wilfreds family are doing well as can be seen from Picture of an Annual Dance of The Londoners Society with Wilfred as President and Joe as Master of Ceremonies, Wilfred was also Chairman of a local Social Club Need more research
Time for a story When I was about 3 years old I had a tricycle that I loved and I worked out if I went out the front gate in Foxholes Rd I could ride all the way down Foxholes Rd turn right into Belle Vue Rd then right again into Belle Vue Cres and up the road so as to go in the back gate, well one day I met Mum coming up the hill, she was not happy to say the least and I was told in no uncertain terms never to do it again. A couple of days later gramps "Wilfred" asked whats the matter and I told him I could not go out the front gate Etc Etc. He said not a problem go out the back gate and come in the front, well this worked fine as far as I was concerned until one day I met Mum coming home from work again and I started getting a telling off, in my defense I told her gramps had said to go this way and all of a sudden I did not seem to be in trouble although I was banned from doing it . . .again.
We will never know if this was the reason but shortly after this had happened Phylis Joe and Geoffrey moved out to go and live about a mile down the road. Wilfred was not happy with this and within a few months bought a house in Blandford, found a shop and offered a partnership in the business to Phylis so as to bring the family back together, so we all moved to Blandford, he was still working as a Manufacturers Representative and Phylis opened "The Art Shop" which quickly grew into selling Toys, Fancy Goods and Artist Materials, Wilfred gave up his work in sales and opened a Hobbies section, the family ran this business for about 12 years until closing it down in 1968 when Wilfred retired, by this time the family lived at Ashburton House and shortly after Phylis Joe and Geoffrey moved out to go and live in Beaulieu while Wilfred and his wife Olive stayed in Blandford.
In 1975 Wilfred and Olive planned to stay for a couple of weeks with Phylis and Joe for Christmas but during this visit Olive became unwell, a Doctor was called but she died during the evening of the 18th of December,

Wilfred never went home and stayed at Nightingale Cottage for the next 7 years until moving to Fawley around the time his Son in Law Joe died, a few months later he also past on and was cremated at Southampton Crematorium and his ashes scattered in the Garden of Remembrance where his Wifes, Daughter and son in Laws ashes are also scattered.
