Rufus Matteson was born on October 24, 1752 in West Greenwich, Kent County, Rhode Island. He was the son of James and Hannah (Sweet) Matteson.

Rufus married Rhoda Andrew(s) in 1772 in Coventry, Kent, Rhode Island. They had the following children: Hannah, Oliver C., Benjamin, Rufus Jr., Betsey, and James G.

Rufus was a Revolutionary War Patriot serving for 6 mos. as Private in the Rhode Island Line, the pension for which his widow, wife Rhoda, received. Rufus passed away on September 6, 1834.
