In the 1880 Wonewoc, Juneau, WI, Federal Census, Jacob is listed as "at home" because of a "cut foot". He must have been out of school because of the injury.

According to Jacob's obituary which appeared in the April 7, 1938, Wonewoc Reporter, "Jacob died at the home of his daughter, Bessie, and his passing brought to an end of many months of suffering. The body was brought to Wonewoc by a train Tuesday morning and services in charge of Reverend Litchfield were held from the Methodist Church.....He had moved to Wonewoc with his parents where he lived until fifteen years ago when he moved to Madison. While a resident of Wonewoc, Mr. Matteson pursued his trade of carpenter, where he helped build several of the buildings at the Wonewoc Spiritualist Camp (including the kitchen and chapel) and served for a time as village marshall."
