Robert was born in Virginia in 1825. He was the son of James Matthews and Elizabeth Allen. In 1847 Robert married Sarah Elizabeth Abington and together they were parents of seven children. In 1861 Robert enlisted as a Prvate into Co. A, Virginia 42nd Infantry Regiment. He was killed near Gordonsville, Virginia in 1863 at age 38.

Findagrave lists his death in 1864 but his Civil War service records and wife’s pension application give year 1863. Wife gave his death location near Gordonsville, Virginia where The 42nd was engaged in the Battle of Mine Run Nov 27-Dec 2, 1863.
