Samuel was born in 1647. He is the son of James Matthews. He married Elizabeth Crowell about 1671. He died after 1679.

There certainly was a Samuel Mathews in Cape May, a contemporary of the Crowells of Cape May:

12 3mo. 1686: witness in court (a Thomas Mathews also mentioned); also appointed constable

30 Dec 1693: Samuel Mathews, Sr., executor and legatee of John Else of Cape May

20 March 1693/94: grand juror

12 May 1695: coroner

20 December 1699: justice

May 1700: justice

May 1701: sheriff

1705: captain of militia and assessor

6 June 1710: witness to will of Ezkiel Eldridge of New England Township; inv. by Yelverton Crowell and others

1713: ensign

A Samuel of Cape May made will 4 Feb 1715-5, pro. 9 May 1715.
