In the 1871 England Census John Matthews 36 born about 1835 in Otterton Devon England, Coker Drawer, was head of his household in Witton le Wear, Durham. Other Household Members were his wife Jane Matthews 30 Hett, and their children, all born in Witton le Wear, Robert W Matthews 9, Mary E Matthews 6, John R Matthews 4, Sarah J Matthews 2, and Thomas H Matthews 7/12. Also, his mother in law Mary Jackson 67 Durham, and her son Robert T Jackson 20 Witton le Wear. [1]
