Advertisements from the Hereford Journal from 1835 detail one tailor, Timothy Hilo Mathews, who was also a shopkeeper and retailer of beer and cider from Fownhope. He was noted as being in the debtors’ gaol, but a few weeks later was advertising for two journeymen tailors, implying a not insubstantial business.[5]
The inn or pub, at the centre of the community, often acted as a forum for informal pawnbroking and a shop as well. In a court case reported from 1830, stolen articles of clothing were sold at a public house between Worcester and Leominster, reflecting the idea of pubs as places where goods could be traded, especially clothing.[6]
