Clara Matthews was born in about 1866 in Brampton, Derbyshire. She was the daughter of Edward Matthews and Jane (Wright) Matthews. Her birth was registered in the first quarter of the year, in Chesterfield district.

Clara married John J Bewley in 1885, in a registrar-attended ceremony in Prescot district.

Their son John H was born in about 1887 in St Helens.

Their daughter Jessie was born in about 1889 in St Helens.
