Biography

John Matthews was born in 1859 in Rogate, Sussex, England to Thomas Matthews and Mary (Carpenter) Matthews. His birth was registered in Midhurst, Sussex in the third quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Carpenter.[1]

John Matthews, son of Thomas, a blacksmith, & Mary, residing at Rogate, was christened on 7 Aug 1859 in Rogate.[2]

In 1861 John Matthers (age 1) lived at the Blacksmiths Shop in Habin, Rogate with his father Thomas (38, Blacksmith), mother Mary (46), and three siblings: Elizabeth (11), Frances (9, Scholar), and William (4, Scholar).[3]

In 1871 John Matthews (age 11, Scholar) lived at Habin in Rogate with his father Thomas (48, Blacksmith), mother May (56), sister Elizabeth (21, School Teacher), and brother Wm (14, Blacksmith).[4]

John Matthews married Eliza Messenger in 1881. The marriage was registered in Winchester, Hampshire in the first quarter of the year.[5]

John and Eliza had two daughters:

  1. Jane Messenger Matthews (1881-)
  2. Mary Matthews (1883-)

In 1881 John Matthews (age 21, Blacksmith) lived at Matthews Cottage in Habin, Rogate parish with his father Thomas (58, Blacksmith Employing 2 Men), mother Mary (66), and sister Elizabeth (31, Assist School Mistress).[6] John's wife Eliza Matthews (24, Formerly Cook) was staying at 19 Union Street in Winchester with her parents, George & Ann Messinger.

In 1891 John Matthews (age 31, Blacksmith) lived at Nyewoods in Harting, Sussex with his wife Eliza (35) and two daughters: Jane (10, Scholar) and Mary (8, Scholar).[7]

In 1901 John Matthews (age 41, Blacksmith) lived at Nyewoods in Harting with his wife Eliza (44).[8]

In 1911 John Matthews (age 51, Assistant Blacksmith Journeyman) lived in Habin, Rogate with his wife Eliza (54) - they had been married 30 years and 2 children had been born in their marriage (both still living).[9]

John Matthews passed away in 1917, aged 57 years. His death was registered in Midhurst in the second quarter of the year.[10]
