George was born on the 27th October 1873 and was christened on the 11th January 1874 at Archway Road Wesleyan Methodist Church, Holloway, Middlesex, the son of George William Matthews (1851 - 1914) and Mary Austin (Williams) Matthews (~1853 - 1944). They were living at 12 Hampden Road, Upper Holloway, Middlesex.[1][2]

1891 Census on the 5th April 1891 George a grocer's assistant, was living at 5 Green Brae, Edmonton, Middlesex with his parents George and Mary, and his siblings Mary, William, Ann, and Edmond.[3]
George, the son of George William Matthews a bootmaker, married Annie Rendell (1872 - ), the daughter of William Rendell a butcher, on the 8th May 1898 at St Jude's Church, Kensal Rise, London. He was an omnibus conductor living at 118 Highgate Road, Kensal Rise, and Annie was living at 44 Third Avenue, Kensal Rise. The witnesses were ? Joseph Edwards and Emily Jane Wilshire.[4]
1901 Census on the 31st March 1901 George an omnibus conductor, was living at 37 Crogsland Road, St Pancras, London with his wife Annie, and their daughter Annie.[5]
1911 Census on the 2nd April 1911 George an omnibus driver, was living at 145 Plashet Road, Plaistow, London with his wife Annie and their children Annie, George and Edward.[6]
In the 1921 census George (age 47), Motor Omnibus Driver, was the married head of household at 18 Jephson Road, Upton Park, East Ham, Essex & London, England.[7]

George died aged 69 about 1941 in Ilford, Essex.[9]
