Joel was born ca 1751-1755, probably in Virginia. He was a son of Preston Matthews and Unknown Ransbird.[1]

Joel married twice: 1) Patty (Unknown) b ca 1757 ? Virginia. 2) Jane Moore mar March 3, 1821 at Pike County, Ohio.[2][1]
