Thomas Matthews was born in Wilkes County, Georgia to Robert Matthews and Mary Smith. He married Nancy Westmoreland and they had ten children.
He served in the Creek Indian war in 1836, Company 1, the Fayette Blues, 53rd Regiment, Georgia Militia. From 1842 to 1850 he owned Starr's Mill in what is now known as Fayette County.
He died in 1884 in Fayette County, Georgia and was buried in the Matthews Family Cemetery in Fayette County.[1]
