Biography

Richard Matthews was born on November 12, 1846 at Prince Edward Island to William Matthews and Elizabeth Burgoyne.[1]

On May 4, 1869, Richard and Harriet Clow were married. The majority of their children were born to Harriet, his wife. Those not born to Harriet were born to daughters of Richard Matthews.

The Daily Examiner reports on October 6, 1894, the case of "The Queen vs. Richard Matthews". His court case was seen October 4, 1894, at which time he was 48 years of age and resided on Prince Edward Island, Lot 9. On court papers he listed his occupation as fisherman. Although he pled not guilty, after one hour of deliberation by the jury, he was found guilty of incest and sentenced to 20 lashes and five years imprisonment. In the court records Samuel Clow (Harriet's brother) is listed as witness for the prosecution. Richard served his time in the Dorchester penitentiary in New Brunswick.[2]

Richard died on December 20, 1911, in Portage, Prince Edward Island, Canada, at the age of 64.

Occupation: Farmer. At trial he was a fisherman. His later occupation was odd jobs.

Just noticed in the 1881 Canada Census father of William, also named William, listed himself as Scottish. Will see where this leads.
Good day to you Kim. After consulting with a wonderful Wikitree mentor, I have initiated the merge to see if Bedford's data is corrected. Thank you.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Richard by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Richard:

Matthews-67 and Matthews-1691 appear to represent the same person because: They have the same spouse and Bedford Matthews will have same parents.

Hi Kim. I noted you used the phrase "cleaning up the mess". Is that regarding Bedford Matthews or are there other issues you have noted. I am an active member. Feel free to collaborate with me. I have contact with other descendents of this tree and appreciate the efforts others offer. Thank you. I am pending this merge because a granddaughter of William Matthews Keeps in touch. Elizabeth Burgoyne was from England.
Matthews-67 and Matthews-1691 are not ready to be merged because: The consequences of this merge are unclear to me. Will have to research this more.

Thank you, Ki,m. My concerns are as follows. One Bedford Matthews has full siblings under Richard Matthews and Harriet Clow. The siblings of the other Bedford is listed as half sibling to the other siblings. How is that cleared by merging The 2 Richard Matthews. The Matthews-67 was created first. Whoever created Matthews-1691 did not check the list of possible matches that appears upon creating that portion of the tree. How many other Matthews created incorrectly will require merging?
Matthews-1691 and Matthews-67 appear to represent the same person because: Merging our two Richard Matthews, husband of Harriet Clow, is a start to cleaning up the mess. This way, each Bedford Matthews will have the same parents.
