“Robert was in the Tennessee Militia during the War of 1812. He owned aprox. 800 acres of land near the Cocke County line and NC state line. He is buried in the Matthews-Baxter Cemetery on this land. The original marker still stands, and in front of it is a marker provided by the US Government which was provided through the efforts of Ruth Matthews.” —from the genealogy document titled “Descendants of James Baxter and Robert Matthews” by Jean Rowe 1994 ( great granddaughter of Martha Elizabeth Baxter, daughter of Rev.
