"Other given names commonly put on this list include Unica, Ulrica, Unica, Venice, Venicy, Nicey etc. This is a misreading of the 1870 census entry for Angeline Matthews (XXXXXX A. Matthews). None of these names appear to occur elsewhere in the related Matthews families or on other censuses or documents, suggesting that a mistake was made in reading the name or in the writing by the census taker, probably both. Whatever the cause, the mistake has proliferated on-line, again particularly on Ancestry, ultimately reaching the point of being listed as an additional child. The only name commonly used by her was Angeline or "Angie" which will be used in this profile. That inscrutable attempt at writing the name listed in the 1870 census is “Eunice” (Eunice A. Matthews), a given name that does occur elsewhere in Matthews families of Alabama. The census taker was probably not familiar with the name and wrote it as he heard it, "Unice". " The preceeding is copied from the profile for Angeline's father, William J. Matthews.
