James Matthews was born about January 5, 1852 in DeKalb County, Missouri, United States, son of William Simpson Matthews (1827–1908) and Frances Martha DeShazer (1825–1905).

James had a sister, Sarah Ellen Matthews (1854–1934).

James (18) married Rhoda Simon (15) (born in 1854 in Ohio; daughter of Adam Simon and Mary Jane (Powell) Simon) on April 17, 1870 in Nemaha.[1] Their known children were:

In 1880, James (28) Mathews was living in Valley, Nemaha, Kansas. [2]

In 1900, James was living in Spring Valley, Polk, Oregon. [3]

James passed away on August 5, 1944 in Marion County, Oregon, aged about 92.[4] [5]
