Biography

Edward Matthews was born on December 29, 1836, to David Matthews and Lora (Perry) Matthews of Potsdam, New York.[1] Through his father David, Edward was a direct descendant of John Howland and Elizabeth (Tilley) Howland of the Mayflower.

In 1850, Edward (13) was living on the family farm near Potsdam, New York, with his parents and siblings.[2]

In 1860, Edward (23) was a clerk living in a boarding house in Potsdam, New York.[3]

On July 1, 1863, when he registered for the military draft during the American Civil War, Edward (27) was a tanner living in Oyster Bay, New York.[4]

Edward (33) and Sarah E. Sheldon applied for a marriage license on May 24, 1870, in Fayette, Iowa,[5] and they were married on May 29, 1870.[6]The couple had at least four known children, including:

  1. Laura Belle (1871-1946), d. unmarried, age 75
  2. Bertha (1873-1887), d. unmarried, age 13
  3. George Edward (1875-1959), m. (1st) 12 Jun 1907, Regena Clara Paulson (1882-1910), m. (2nd) 4 Mar 1913, Ida Mae Benke (1884-1963)
  4. Charles (1879-)

On July 29, 1870, Edward (33) and wife Sarah (30) were farmers living in rural Smithfield Township, Iowa, and sharing a home with the John Bahr family, fellow transplants from New York.[7]

In 1880, Edward (43) and Sarah (40) were living on a farm of their own in Center Township, Fayette County, Iowa, with their children Lora (8), Bertha (6), George (4) and Charles (3). Also living with the family were 24-year-old farm hand Wilford Haugh from Wisconsin and 45-year-old female school teacher A. C. Sheldon from New York.[8]

In 1885, Edward (48) and Sarah (45) were living in Center Township, Fayette County, Iowa, with their children Laura Belle (13), Bertha (11), George (9) and Charles (7).[9]

In 1900, Edward (63) and Sarah (60) were empty nesters living on Spring Street in El Dorado Springs, Missouri.[10]

Edward Matthews died on December 10, 1906, in El Dorado Springs, Missouri.[1] He is buried in El Dorado Springs Cemetery, El Dorado Springs, Cedar County, Missouri, USA.[1]
