Christopher was born about 1821 and christened on November 11, 1821 in St. Levan, Cornwall, England. His parents were James Matthews and Barbara[1].
He passed away in 1908[2]. DEATH. MATTHEWS.—On March 30, at the residence of Mr E. Nankivell (son-in-law), Penang, Christopher Matthews, aged 86 years; leaving 2 sons, 3 daughters, 25 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren. A colonist of 61 years Obituary: Yorke's Peninsula Advertiser (SA : 1878 - 1922), Friday 3 April 1908, page 2 The Late Mr. Christopher Matthews — Mr. Christopher Matthews, father ot Mr. James and Robert Matthews of Gawler South died on Sunday at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr E Nankivell, Penang,near Moonta. He had reached his 87th year. Mrs Matthews died nearly five vears ago at the age of 82. The late gentleman was a native of Cornwall, and was born at St Levin. In May 1847 he and his wife left Plymouth South for South Australia in the ship 'Cressy' and arrived here on August 20 After staying in Adelaide for a little while the couple removed to the Burra and Mr. Matthews was engaged in carting for twelve months. He then went in for farming and for 21 years carried on agricultural operations at Auburn, and later at Boors Plains near Kadina. When the Victorian diggings broke out Mr. Matthews tried his luck there and was a mate of the Hon. James Martin. When the latter had to leave on account of family bereavement Mr Matthews came away also. They arranged to return to the diggings, but Mr Martin found it impossible at the last moment and the project was abandoned. The late gentleman was once a Councillor in the Kadina Corporation, and was also connected with the Kadina Agricultural Society for a number of years. He became a member of the Bible Christian Church at Auburn and remained a member of that body. The Boars Plains Bible Christian Church was built on a piece of ground he donated for that purpose. The golden wedding of Mr and Mrs Matthews was celebratedin Gawler in April, 1897. There survive two sons (Messrs James and Robert Matthews of Gawler South) and three daughters (Mrs Edward Nankivell of Penang, Mrs. T H. Rodda of Moonta, and Miss Matthews of Penang.

Mrs. Elizabeth Wearn Nankivell, who died recently at her home in Robert Street, Moonta, was born on August 6th., 1851, and was the first white child to be born in the Auburn District. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Matthews. In 1871 she married Mr. Edward Nankivell, and went to live in the Kadina District. Four years later they went to Penong, in the Hundred of Tiparra, and lived there for 28 years, her husband proving a successful pioneer farmer. About 30 years ago she went to Moonta. She was Mayoress in 1912 and during the war was engaged in Red Cross work. She was an active member of the Methodist Church. She leaves a husband, four sons, James E. (Adelaide); Christopher H. (Moonta); Horace J., and Arthur E. (Penang), and four daughters, Mesdames Elizabeth A. Bosanko (Adelaide); Mary M. Fox (Adelaide); Emily M. Rowe (Moonta); and Elsie B. Richards (Port Pirie); also two brothers, James (Gawler), and Robert (Adelaide), and two sisters, Mesdames Barbara Rodda (Boor's Plains); and Emily Nankervis (Adelaide).
