William E. Matthews was born in Gates Co., N.C. about 1825.

On 19 Jan 1847, William E. Mathews married Jane Mathilda Harrell or Howell in Gates, North Carolina. Jane was born about 1829 in Gates Co., N.C. She probably passed away before 1900.

In 1870 he made his living as a blacksmith. He died before 1880. (In the US Census of 1880, Mathilda Jame was widowed and living in a household headed by her son Franklin. Several of her children lived with them.)
