Family recollection is that Tom’s father was George, and he had two siblings, John and Agnes. Tom married Mary Argyle and they had 5 children, Thomas, Agnes Gertrude, William (d young), Ada Florence and Hilda Martha. He was a tiler working in Lincoln, pushing a barrow of tiles. June remembers him but did not know him well. [1]
Thomas's birth was registered in the Jul-Aug-Sep quarter of 1873 in the Belper district, Derbyshire, England.[2]
Tom was christened on 10th August 1873 at Riddings, Derbyshire, England.[3]
In 1881 at the time of the England Census, Tom was a scholar, age 7, living at 35 Coupland Pl, Alfreton, Derbyshire with his parents George (28, tiler maker employing 3 boys) and Ann (31). Also in the household Tom’s siblings Eliza (age 9, scholar) and John (age 6, scholar).[4]

In 1897 (Jun quarter) Thomas Matthews married Mary Argyle, at Ilkeston Holy Trinity, Basford, Nottinghamshire, England. [6]
At the time of the 1901 England Census Thomas was a boarder in The Nob, Norton, Leicester, the home of Thomas and Ellen Harding. George was 28, married, a slater. Also boarding at the same address was Tom's father George and Arthur Hutchley, slater's labourer: [7]

In 1911 Thomas was a slater and tiler, age 38. He and Mary lived at 13 Spring Garden Terrace, Ilkeston with their five children. Mary's sister Ada Argyle was living with them. [8][9]

Tom ran a slater and tiler business in Ilkeston but moved with his family to Lincoln in 1914, where he was employed by Pattinson and Co Ltd of Rope Walk.[10] Tom's wife Mary died in about 1916.
Tom died (age 64) in 1937 in Derbyshire, England.[11]
