LEVI MATTOX, born Februay 5, 1833, Clermont Co, Oh. Complexion - Fair, Height - 5'10", Eyes- Grey, Hair- Brown, Occupation - Farmer. Levi Mattox was visiting Williamsburg, Clermont Co, Ohio, with his family, on July 13, 1864, when a sudden raid was initiated by Confederate Cavalry leader, John Hunt Morgan, with a force of 2500 men. They freely took whatever pleased their fancy, the greatest preference being for horses and mules. Great alarm attended in invasion. Silverware, jewelry and other valuables were hastily buried, and livestock hurried to nearby forests and hidden. Many stores were looted. Little resistance was offered by the citizens due to fear of retaliation by property burning. Levi Mattox was so infuriated by this spectacle that he handed the child he was holding to his wife, Almira Melissa, and went marching off with other volunters to revenge this action. They were transported to Hillsboro, Ohio where he enrolled on the 27th day of August, 1864, in , for one year. A bounty of 0.00 was promised upon discharge. Afterwards, on December 26, 1864, he was consolidated with the 83rd Regiment of Ohio Volunteer Infantry, commanded by Captain James R. Lynch. While a member of this organization, in the service and in the line of duty at, on the Transport, "Gray Eagle", in the month of January, 1865, between Natchez, Mississippi and New Orleans, Louisiana, he contracted Camp Diarrhea and upon his arrival at Borreacus, Florida, he was sent to the Regimental Hospital, by the direction of the Surgeon, where he remained for about ten weeks under treatment. He was sent back to his Company, where he remained until about May 30, 1865. He was then sent to the Hospital at Mobile, Alabama, where he remained for two or three weeks. He was then sent to the Hospital at North Carolina, where he remained under treatment until mustered out of the service at New Orleans, Louisiana, on the 16th day of June 1865, in compliance with instructions from the War Department. He applied for a pension June 18, 1879. It was granted. The application and approval was signed by his cousin, Henry B. Mattox, Clerk of Courts. After Levi Mattox's death, December 17, 1897, the pension was extended to his widow, Almira M. [Thompson] Mattox, January 13, 1898. It was paid to her until her death August 11, 1918. More About LEVI LEMUEL MATTOX: PHOTOGRAPH: YES - CIVIL WAR UNIFORM & 50TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY WILL PROVEN:: 1897, CLERMONT CO, OH ******************************************************************************** At 4 p.m. July 13, 1863, Williamsburg was invaded by approximately 2,000 Confederate cavalrymen commanded by Gen. John Hunt Morgan. They ransacked the businesses and stole horses, food, clothing, jewelry, anything considered of value. Morgan stayed at the second Kain Tavern that stood on the north side of Main Street between Third and Fourth streets. Most of his men slept in The Big Field or in the fields along the eastside of the river. Morgan had breakfast at 3:30 a.m. the next morning. His men left town, heading east after burning down the covered bridge that stood on the site of the present bridge on Main Street. They invaded Batavia, Owensville and Withamsville on July 14. Several hours after the Confederates left Williamsburg, Union cavalrymen rode down Gay Street to the ford. Along the street the people offered them what food and drink they could. One of Morgan's men, Capt. George Harris, deserted the rebels and hid in the attic of Byron Williams' home at 112 Gay St.. Williams is recognized as one of the county's premier historians. His son, Dion, who later became a general in the U. S. Marines, is credited with planting the first American flag in Spanish-controlled soil during the Spanish-American War in1898. ***************************************************************************************** Name Rank in Co. age Service Entered Service B Mattox, Levi L Private 32 08/27/64 Enlisted 01/17/65 Trans. 83rdCoB Transferred to Co B, 83rd OVI, Jan 17, 1865. ******************************************************************************** From Ancestry: American Civil War Soldiers about Levi L Mattox Name: Levi L Mattox , Enlistment Date: 27 August 1864 Distinguished Service: DISTINGUISHED SERVICE Side Served: Union State Served: Ohio Unit Numbers: 1878 1878 Service Record: Enlisted as a Private on 27 August 1864 at the age of 32 Enlisted in Company B, 48th Infantry Regiment Ohio on 27 August 1864. Sullivan, Job R. Parker; Lieut.-Cols., Joseph W. Lindsay, James R. Lynch; Majs., James S. Wise, Samuel G. W. Peterson. This regiment was organ- ized from the state at large, from Sept. to Dec., 1861, to serve for three years. On the expiration of its term of serv- ice the original members (except veterans) were mustered out and the organization composed of veterans and recruits retained in service until Jan. 17, 1865, when it was consolidated with the 83d Ohio infantry. On July 24, 1865, a battalion of six companies was organized by the consolidation of the 83d and 114th regiments. Two companies, E and F, were mustered out Oct. 14, 1865, by reason of expiration of term of service, and the remaining four companies, A, B, C and D, were retained in service until May 9, 1866, when they were mustered out in ac- cordance with orders from the war department. The following is a list of battles, in which this regiment bore an honorable part, as given in the Official Army Register, Part V, page 126: Shiloh, Tenn.; Corinth, Chickasaw bayou, Miss.; Arkansas Post, Ark.; Port Gibson, Jackson, Champions hill, Big Black river, Siege of Vicksburg, Miss.; Carrion Crow bayou, Sabine cross- roads, La.; Fort Blakely, Ala. The 48th lost about one-third of its members in the battle of Shiloh. In the attack upon Corinth it was among the first organized troops to enter the Confederate works. At Sabine cross-roads, then a mere remnant of its former self, it severely punished the "Crescent regi- ment," but in turn was overpowered and captured. ****************************************************************************************** Source: The Union Army, vol. 2 Battles Fought Fought on 06 April 1862 at Shiloh, TN.
