Biography

Robert E. Mattox was born 24 Feb 1871 in Hardin Co., Iowa. Son of William W. Mattox and Bithiah Emily Shumway. Robert married Jesse C. Lathrop 09 June 1897 in Hardin Co., Iowa, and lived on a farm near Abbott, Iowa, until moving to South Dakota. Robert came to Custer with his family in March 1909 and settled on a homestead southeast of Custer where the family resided. Robert Mattox died during the Influenza epidemic at his home on their farm in Custer, South Dakota, 27 Dec 1918.
