Note:

  • William Hall “Bill” Mattox was born and raised in the Cundiff community of Jack County, Texas.  He and his brother, Ray, were as close as brothers could be.  Bill followed Ray like a shadow and often became involved in Ray's adventures and pranks just by being near.  He worked on the farm with his father and brothers and assumed more responsibility as his brothers married and his father grew older.  Bill developed a special relationship with his nieces and nephews as they arrived, which continued through the years with their children.  To them he was just "Bill" who was always there for them to listen, encourage and lend a helping hand.  His humor and laughter made the day brighter.  No uncle was ever loved more.  Bill and his older sister, Carrie, never married and remained at home to care for their elderly parents and then for their mother after the death of their father.  They continued to care for each other living in Cundiff and then Bridgeport.  Bill became a barber and also worked in maintenance at Run-Away Bay.  Over time his Model T Fords had been replaced by two Volkswagons which he drove with abandon, and increasing speed.  After the death of his sister, Carrie, he ventured out for adventures with the nieces and nephews, even for boat rides on Possum Kingdom Lake.  He no longer ate at home but grew a garden, planting by the twins, just so he could provide them with produce.  In his last days in a nursing facility, there was hardly a time when one or more of his nieces or nephews were not near.  They gathered in his room in the evenings and often the words were whispered, "Bill, we love you!"  The nieces and nephews were there for the final farewell when he was laid to rest.  They still tell the stories about him and join in laughter.  He will always live in their hearts - this Bill.
