Biography

John Mattson, alias John Dalbo, was born about 1649 in New Sweden, the son of Matts Hansson and Elizabeth Hansson.[1] After his father's death in 1653, John's mother married Anders Larsson Dalbo, resulting in John Mattson also using the surname Dalbo. [2]

BY 1673 John had married Maria Lom, daughter of Måns Svensson Lom, and owned part of the Moyamensing tract south of Wicaco. In 1664 he sold that land and moved to Gloucester county where he died in 1701, survived by seven children.[1]

Death and Legacy

The abstract of the will of "John Matson of "Grenig Township, Glossiter Co., yeoman," dated 12 March 1700/1, names children "Mathyas, Moune, Adrie, Mary, three youngest daughers, names not given. Real and personal estate. Executors--William Dolbo and Stefan Ions. Witnesses--William Dolbo and Peter Long. No jurat of proof." The inventory was taken 3 May 1701 and amounted to £14 real estate and £65.2 personal, made by "Peter Long and Andrie Colk (?)".[3]

Research Notes

Possible descendant or relative not yet on Wikitree who was also a resident of Greenwich Township. It's also possible he is a descendant of Peter Mattson, whose son Mathias Matson is possibly the kinsman named in the will (but wouldn't he be called uncle not kinsman?)

  • Mathias Matson wrote his will 3 Nov 1747 (inventory 4 Dec 1747) naming brothers Andrew and Peter. "Mathias Matson" described as a kinsman, later chooses not to be executor.[4]

Heather, the MM record noted below is several decades later after doing a deep dive on it. Have not exhausted the Chester MM records but I don't think John Matson-27 was born in this MM so now looking for admittance record in meeting minutes (they are not in any logical order in the Ancestry system or whoever's microfilm they are streaming).

Heather, found a Chester MM record for a John Matson listing father as Aaron Matson and mother Mary. It needs more research to accurately date the manuscript entry. I notice John’s not in the list of kids we have here (which is from the Craig article). There is a 1983 Genealogy of the Mattson Family by Walmsley pub by Gloucester County (NJ) Historical Society, I will check it tomorrow.

Is there anything substantive to suggest that John Matson-27 is the son of Johann Mattson-103? I don't see any of the children of Mattson-103 that look like they could be Matson-27.

I've seen this relationship postulated a couple of places (FAG) but always without any sourcing. From some records I bumped into I suspect there may be another John Matson or Mattson who could be a son/relative of Johann--but different children names (which are Swedish), different wife, etc.

In my research on Matson-27 (not completed) I see implications there may be Welsh Quaker connections but I have not seen anything pointing toward New Sweden (do any of the Johann Mattson family appear in Old Swedes Church records?).
