Biography

When Mark Modlin was born on October 26, 1813, in Randolph, North Carolina, his father, Joseph, was 38 and his mother, Violet, was 37. He had seven brothers and four sisters. He died on November 30, 1869, in New Castle, Indiana, at the age of 56.

Updated by Gene Modlin 20150627 Alcander Modlin is a native of Henry County, Ind., born Dec. 23, 1844. His father, Mark Modlin, came to Indiana with his father Joseph Modlin, when he was fourteen years of age and settled on the farm now owned by his widow and her heirs. He was married in February, 1838, to Cynthia A., daughter of John and Elizabeth Stinson. After his marriage he followed farming and in 1852 located on the farm now owned by his widow and heirs. He died Nov. 30, 1869. Of a family of nine children eight lived till maturity. One son, John H., was wounded in the late war, and died of his wounds July 23, 1864. Mark Modlin was Superintendent of the county poor farm fourteen years. Alcander following farming and teaching and is now engaged in the small fruit and nursery business. He was married in 1882 to Julia, daughter of Benjamin and Sarah McCune, of West Virginia.

[1] Ms. Marianne Hughes, curator of the Henry County Historical Society Museum had found while going through all the miscellaneous odds and ends they have stored in the attic at the museum she had come across an old ledger that had been kept by Mark Modln the asylum superintendent for the years 1852 - 1853. These were names I had no record of. These names are of the paupers prior to the fire of 1855.
