Biography

Margaretha (Mauer) Reizenstein was a Volga German.

Family #253 in the 1834 Grimm census.

Anna Margaretha Mauer was from Rothammel, a Catholic village on the east side of the Volga, while Grimm is a Reformed colony on the west side of the river.

Also known as Pamyatnaya, the colony was founded on August 21, 1767 and named after its first mayor.

Typically there was little intermarriage between Catholics and Lutheran & Reformed settlers, but somehow, perhaps in Saratov or another larger city, Jakob Reizenstein met Anna Margaretha Mauer and married, choosing to settle in Grimm rather than Rothammel.

Anna Margaretha is not mentioned in the 1834 census, when she would have been only 64. All of her children were adults by 1828. It's possible she outlived her husband Jakob and remarried, living with another family. More than likely, however, she probably passed away prior to 1834. By that time, the four younger sons moved to a different household, #288, and only eldest son Michael remained in his father's house with his wife and six children.
