Robert was born on the 18th July 1879, in Ponteland, Castle Ward, Durham, England to Edward Maughan and Ann Oliver, [1]

He passed away on the 3rd January 1962, aged 82, at Bensham General Hospital, Saltwell Lane, Gateshead, Durham, England, and his will went to probate on the 7th February 1962 at the Newcastle-upon-Tyne office, [8], [9]
Robert served in the Northumberland Fusiliers, Queen's Own (Royal West Kent) Regiment, Regimental Number316157, 205481. He was 36 years and 130 days old, height 5ft 4ins, chest 34ins when fully expanded with 2ins range of expansion, he had no distinctive marks and his religion was Church of England. He was awarded the British War and Victory medal, He suffered a head wound, and was discharged for being no longer physically fit for war service on the 6th December 1917.
