Robert was born on the 18th July 1879, in Ponteland, Castle Ward, Durham, England to Edward Maughan and Ann Oliver, ^[1]

In 1881 his family were living at Benton Bridge Farm, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland, England. Robert was a Farmer,John was a Farmers son, Edward was a Grocer, Anne was a Grocers wife and Robert was below school age ^[2]

In 1891 his family were living at 116 Percy Street, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland, England. Edward and Annie were Grooms, Robert, Mary, Edward, and Wilfred were all at school, Elizabeth and John were below school age, ^[3]

In 1901 his family were living at 30 Sheraton Street, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland, England. Edward was a Grocers Warehouseman, Ann had no occupation listed, Robert was an Engineer, Mary was a Milliner, Edward was a Joiners Apprentice, Wilfred was an Upholsterers Apprentice, Elizabeth, John ans Septimus were all of school age, ^[4]

In 1911 his family were living at 81 Split Crow Road, Mount Pleasant, Gateshead, Durham, England. Robert was a Barman, Mary had no occupation listed, and LUcy, Amelia, and Annie were all below school age. They had been married for 7 years and had 4 children, 3 were living and sadly one had passed away,^[6]

In 1939 his family were living in Gateshead, Durham, England, Robert was a Barman, and Mary was listed as Unpaid Domestic Duties, their address has been blacked out, ^[7]

He passed away on the 3rd January 1962, aged 82, at Bensham General Hospital, Saltwell Lane, Gateshead, Durham, England, and his will went to probate on the 7th February 1962 at the Newcastle-upon-Tyne office, ^[8], ^[9]

Military

Robert served in the Northumberland Fusiliers, Queen's Own (Royal West Kent) Regiment, Regimental Number316157, 205481. He was 36 years and 130 days old, height 5ft 4ins, chest 34ins when fully expanded with 2ins range of expansion, he had no distinctive marks and his religion was Church of England. He was awarded the British War and Victory medal, He suffered a head wound, and was discharged for being no longer physically fit for war service on the 6th December 1917.
