Biography

Virginia Amelia was born 21 April 1840 the 3rd child of 15 (to the best of my knowledge) of Hayden A. Mauldin and Louisa Redwine in Yalobusha County, Mississippi. On 21 April 1859 in Independence County, Arkansas she married George "Rook" Alexander Sharp who was also born in Yalobusha County. It is apparent the Mauldin and Sharp families knew each other in Mississippi because one of Virginia's siblings has the middle name of Sharp. Louisa Redwine was daughter of Reverend William Redwine, one of the earliest traveling Methodist preachers in Mississippi.

Virginia's older sister Kizziah had married Thomas Sharp, brother of Rook Sharp, before they made the move from Mississippi. Rook and Thomas's farms were next to each in what became Cleburne County on the new Independence County line. Virginia had 2 sons, Rufus "Roof" and Rolland and then died while Rook Sharp was away fighting in the Civil War when Rolland was a baby. The family story is that Roof and Rolland were taken in by a neighbor family of the name Hamby. Rook ended up marrying one of the daughters Viturria Hamby when she came of age (15) and according to Rolland she was a good mother to Virginia's boys.
