**Burgrave (from German: Burggraf, Latin: burggravius, burcgravius, burgicomes) was since the medieval period a title for the ruler of a castle, especially a royal or episcopal castle, as well as a castle district (castellany) or fortified settlement or city.[7][8] The burgrave was a count in rank (German Graf, Latin Comes) equipped with judicial powers.[9][10] From: Burgrave. en.Wikipedia.org. My early morning comments may have sounded a bit bossy -sorry!
I suggest that enough evidence might be obtained by comparing the Medlands quotations reproduced under Aimery IV de Thouars' entry, with those related to Waleran III de Meulan, to completely detach Auremgarde/Orengarde from the latter, and create an entry for Geoffrey de Mauléon as her father. In particular, look at the Latin versions of these names, usually Mellentis and de Maloleone: clearly different places. The heraldry is different too.
As it happens, Waleran de Meulan is my ancestor too, but through different lines.
I am sitting here in our holiday gite in Mauléon (Deux-Sevres), just a few miles from Thouars, and I can assure you that my ancestress Auremgarde was the daughter of Geoffrey de Mauléon, who founded the abbey here. No link with the Meulan family, and we are nowhere near the Pyrenees!
I adopted the profile of Waleran in October 2023 and am just now turning my attention to it. Reading the comments, I'm about to detach him & his wife as parents. Do you know if Geoffrey de Mauléon has a profile? (I looked but didn't find one.)
Thanks for adopting her. I don't hold authorisation for medieval editing, so I have to tiptoe round these things! I couldn't find an entry for Geoffrey either. There is one for a Robert born c1040, who is perhaps the son of Auremgarde's brother Raoul, Sire de Mauléon -but then, how did the title fall to Aimery de .Thouars?
The fleur-de-lis and chequer arms seem to be of the town of Meulan-en-Yvelines, and probably shouldn't be on Auremgarde's page, but -confusingly - the Counts of Meulan seem to have used a similar one, but also a lion rampant not unlike that of the Mauléon family. The location of Mauléon definitely needs to be corrected, though.
Actually, I had not adopted this profile. It was the profile for Waleran that had been attached as her father that I adopted (WikiTree says I'm a descendant through his daughter Adeline de Meulan).
I thought I understood correctly that Waleran's location was Meulan, Yvelines, Ile-de-France & Auremgarde's family, the Mauléons, were of Aquitaine. Re-reading your comments, it would seem that the "Pyrenees-Atlantiques" is wrong? All three dropdown options for location include Pyrenees in some form (but dates are modern). The Wikipedia page for Aquitaine has it as one of the Departments of Bordeaux (Dordogne, Gironde, Landes, Lot-et-Garonne, Pyrénées-Atlantiques). I couldn't find Mauléon mentioned on any of the Wikipedia pages for them & https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maul%C3%A9on gives the following options:
Mauléon is the name or part of the name of several communes in France:
Mauléon, Deux-Sèvres, in the Deux-Sèvres department
Mauléon Aerodrome
Mauléon-d'Armagnac, in the Gers department
Mauléon-Barousse, in the Hautes-Pyrenees department
Mauléon-Licharre, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department
Le Bâtard de Mauléon, French novel by Alexandre Dumas.
I apologize, but geography is not my strong point (outside of Virginia).
