Biography

Mary Ann (Maupin) Clare is the descendant of a Huguenot emigrant.

Mary Ann was born on 29 Oct 1828 in Gasconade County, Missouri, the daughter of Thomas Maupin and Anna Miller.

The 1850 Census[1] shows her at age 18 in the home of her brother, "Irvin", next to the farm where her parents are in Franklin County, Missouri.

She went with her family to Oregon in 1853, only to return in 1854. They took the Oregon trail across the county to get there, but traveled by ship to return. They sailed down the Pacific to the Isthmus of Panama, which was then crossed by burro, and then sailed to St. Louis.

She married William Fox Clare on 17 Nov 1854 while at sea on the Pacific Ocean, en-route back to Missouri. - (If any family member knows more details to this story, please add it here!)
They had the following children:

  1. Rebecca Ann "Becky" (Clare) Ball (1856–abt.1931), married Norman Ball
  2. Nancy Jane Clare (1857–1934), married George Cox
  3. Flaveous Josephus Clare (1858–1954), married Eliza Jane Hendricks
  4. Jacob " Jake" Daniel Clare (1860–1917), married Harriet Jane Henderson
  5. Frances Ellen Clare (1862–1880) (twin of Thomas)
  6. Thomas Horatio Clare (1862–1937), married Flora May Porter
  7. Timothy Fountain Clare (1864–1945), married 1st Arnold, 2nd Fannie McCoyd
  8. Margaret Susan Clare (1865–1961), married Charles W. Hendricks

The 1860 Census[2] shows her at age 33 with her husband and three young children in Prairie Township, Montgomery County, Missouri.

The 1870 Census[3] shows her at age 43 with her husband and eight children in Prairie Township, Montgomery County, Missouri.

William passed away in 1875, and the 1880 Census shows Mary at age 50, as a widowed head-of-household, with eight children ranging from 13 to 22 years old.[4]

The 1900 Census[5] shows her at age 71, widowed, in the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Charles Hendricks, in Prairie Township, Montgomery County, Missouri. This census states that she is the mother of 8 children with 7 still living.

The 1910 Census shows her living with Charles and Susan Hendricks, her daughter and son-in-law.[6] This census also states that she is the mother of 8 children with 7 still living.

She died on 26 Jun 1911 in Prairie Township, Montgomery County, Missouri,[7] and is buried at the Union Chapel Cemetery in Montgomery County, Missouri. [8]
