Thomas Mawson was born in 1841 at Old Wind Mill, Dalton in Furness, Lancashire, England to John Mawson and Margaret (Falconer) Mawson. His birth was registered in Ulverston, Lancashire in the second quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Falconer.^[1] Thomas was christened in Dalton-in-Furness on 9 May 1841.^[2]

In 1841 Thomas Mawson (age 0) lived at Old Wind Mill in Dalton in Furness with his father John (45-49), mother Margratt (45-49), and four older siblings: Margratt (10), John (7), Ellen (5), and Hannah (3).^[3] Thomas Mawson married Ann Atkinson in 1868 and their marriage was registered in Ulverstone, Lancashire, England.
