Biography

Joseph was born in 1703 at Wenham in the Province of Massachusetts Bay, the son of Alexander Maxey and Abigail Miles.[1]

Joseph died before 21 November 1757, when administration of his estate was granted to his widow Mary Maxey.[2]

Joseph married first Rebekah Stacey on 28 February 1727/8 at Attleborough.[3] Children:[4]

  • Abigail b. 19 May 1729; d. probably before 21 November 1753
  • Alexander b. 23 July 1732; d. between 19 March 1738 and 17 November 1760
  • Henry b. 30 January 1734/5
  • Beckah b. 20 June 1737
  • Esther b. 7 May 1739; d. by 17 November 1760

Joseph married second Mary Stanley on 3 November 1752 at Attleborough.[3] Children:[4]

  • Abigail b. 21 November 1753, baptized 24 February 1754
  • Mary b. 15 September 1755

Mary was granted guardianship of Abigail and Mary on 13 February 1758, both being minors under 14 years old.[5]

Division of Joseph's property was made on 17 November 1760.[6] Joseph's son Henry received all of the real estate and was directed to pay cash to Joseph's eldest daughter Becke, second daughter Abigail, and third daughter Mary.

Reseach Notes

One may wonder given the separation between the two marriages above if there were two Josephs here rather than one. The property division record makes it clear that the father of Henry and Beckah was also the father of Abigail and Mary, listing the daughters in the correct order.

Joseph was named in his brother Benjamin's will dated 19 March 1738. He states that his property should go to Joseph's eldest son Alexander, but if Alexander should die with no male heirs, then the property should go to Alexander's brother Henry. If Joseph should leave no male heirs, then the property was to go to any male heirs of Benjamin's brother Josiah.
