John Maxwell was born in 1755, in Essex county, New Jersey, a son of David Maxwell. John was named for his paternal grandfather, John Maxwell of Westfield. During the American Revolution, John served in the Essex county Militia. John also suffered "depredation" by the British, and was offered compensation after the war. [1]
John Maxwell is honored by the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution as DAR Ancestor #A075941. DAR records indicate that Joh died November 30, 1828, in Connecticut Farms, Essex, New Jersey and that his wife's name was Anna Hubbell. Applications for membership in the Society of the DAR have been made by their sons, Abner Maxwell, who married Sally Allen; and of their daughters, Susan Maxwell, who married Stephen Foster; and Esther Maxwell, who married Elias Crane. Captain John Maxwell of New Jersey was the commander of Spencer's Additional Continental Regiment 16th January 1777. He resigned 11th April, 1778 and died in 1828. [3]
