Hugh was born in 1801. Hugh Maxwell ... [1]

Obituary[1]

Hugh Maxwell was born in 1801 in Tennessee, the son of Hugh and Elizabeth (Elliott) Maxwell. His family moved to Indiana when he was young. He was married the 25th of 12th mo. 1825 at Salem Friends Meeting in Union Co., IN, to Anna Talbert (1806-1885), daughter of William and Miriam (Gardner) Talbert. They were the parents of ten children: Alpheus, Calvin, Moses Hugh, Aaron, Albert, Benjamin F., Sarah T., Martha, Louisa, and Mary A.

The Evening Item, Richmond, IN, Monday, May 19, 1884 "DEATH OF AN OLD CITIZEN Hugh Maxwell, one of the oldest citizens of Dublin, died at his home at that place yesterday morning aged about 84 years. Deceased has been in rather feeble health for several months though his condition was not considered dangerous, except from his great age. He was a native of one of the south Atlantic states and emigrated to Indiana at an early day. The greater part of his life was spent in Union county but on retiring from active business he purchased a quiet little home in Dublin where he has since resided. He is well known over eastern Indiana, as a cool clear-headed and yet remarkably gentle and unostentatious man. Starting in the new country with little or nothing, he acquired a very considerable competence--mostly by farming. His venerable wife survives him. Deceased was the father of Benj. F. Maxwell, of Dublin. The funeral took place from the Friends' meeting house at Dublin this morning at 10 o'clock."

The Christian Worker, 6th mo 5, 1884 "MAXWELL--Died at his residence, Dublin, Ind., Fifth mo. 18th 1884, Hugh Maxwell, in hs 84th year.

In his death the church has lost an exemplary father, his fellow-citizens a courteous christian gentleman, and the world one who was the "salt" thereof; knowing in whom he trusted, death had no terrors to him, but calmly, and with the full play of his faculties, he welcomed it as the vestibule into eternal bliss at God's right hand."

The Cambridge City (IN) Tribune, Thursday, May 22, 1884 "Hugh Maxwell, one of the oldest and most esteemed citizens of Dublin, died on Sunday, May 18, 1884. He has been in feeble health for the past year, but not considered dangerously ill except from his great age. His native Sta†e was Tennessee, where he was born in Knox county, January, 1801, and was consequently in the 84th year of his age. He removed with his parents to Union county, this State, in 1816, where he resided until some sixteen years ago, when he became a resident of this place. He was one of the pioneers of Eastern Indiana, and had a large circle of acquaintances. His venerable wife survives him. The deceased was the father of Benjamin Maxwell. The funeral took pace on Tuesday morning at the Fiends meeting house, and was largely attended."
