Biography

Son of John Maxwell, Sr. and Margaret Mary Carson.

DOD also given as 1773.

Emigrated from Ireland to America with family in 1740.


John Maxwell married Mary Bey Gould (1762-) in Washington Co, KY, in 1783. They had three children: Sarah (1784-1845?); Elizabeth (1792-1870); Julia C. (1794-1841).

On the Virginia frontier, John Maxwell, Jr., became an experienced soldier and Indian fighter. He was appointed a captain of cavalry in the Augusta Co militia on 19 Aug 1752 and again as a captain in the Augusta Co militia on 20 May 1760.

Following in doubt: John, Jr. vs John Maxwell, Sr. was the first justice of Botetourt County, and in 1763 he was appointed one of thirty-three justices in Rockbridge Co.
