Biography

Grizel Maxwell, known as Grace lived possibly beyond 89 Yrs. No birth or death record has to date been found. She gave birth to at least 12 children, she is enumerated on the 1841 and appears as head, living in Kilwinning with her son John and grandchild Ann Littlejohn along with two boarders who were born in Ireland.

By 1851 Grace is 89 yrs old and noted as born in Coylton Ayrshire living in the household of Matthew Bennie and his wife Cumming Littlejohn and family. She is noted as the mother in law. It is assumed that Grace died before civil registration 1855.

A newspaper extract in The British Banner dated 6 Dec 1848 informs us that Grace had 15 children, of whom 14 lived to be baptised. The article also mentions that although she is resident in Kilwinning, she also lived in Dundonald Parish for a long time prior to this. I can place the family in Dundonald in the 1820s. Of her children, Marion and Buchan were married there in 1822 and 1823. I believe her son James died in 1829 at Old Rome and also her husband William in 1825 at Old Rome. As these are from the Parish records I cannot verify the connection of the deaths as no ages were given.

Grizzell was born about 1761. ^[1]
