Biography

Son of James “Great White Chief” Maxwell, Sr. (1745-1821) and Jane Roberts (1745-1820).

DOB also given as 1778, 1780, or 1786.

James Maxwell, Jr., married Mary "Polly" Witten (1780-1873) on 25 Apr 1804 in Tazewell Co, VA. They had five children: Witten (1805-1894); Robert (1807-1904); Sarah "Sallie" (1805-?); James, III (?-?); Margaret "Peggy" (1818-1886).

According to Pendleton (History of Tazewell County and Southwest Virginia, page 433), James Maxwell, Jr., was "a scholarly man".
