1840 Lucy J. May, a twin, was born in Virginia, (probably in Botetourt County), USA on Apr 1840 or 1841.[1]
1850 Lucy lived in Botetourt County, Virginia with her family. The 1850 US census classified the family as "mulatto." It is just chronologically possible that Thomas May was her grandfather and Salnoy (?) May her grandmother, but the census was mum on relationships at that time. Thomas May worked as a laborer to support the family, which was recorded as:
1857 Lucy may have had a daughter born on 6 Jan 1857 in Franklin County, Virginia. The child was classified as white and no father was named on the birth record. The birth record gives the mother's last name as "Mays."[3]
1860 Lucy lived with her family in Western District #8 of Botetourt County Virginia, USA. She and her entire family were classified on the 1860 US census as "mulatto." The household comprised:
1870 Lucy's family took in Serena's son Thomas after Serena died. (Serena had been married to William Henry Walker.) The child George may have been Lucy's child. Another child, Philemina Mays born about 1872, may also have been Lucy's. She appears on the 1880 US census.
1880 Lucy, now a partner, if not actually married, to William Walker, lived with her mother and twin sister, Rachel, in Buchanan, Botetourt County, Virginia, USA. Her husband worked as a quarryman. On this census the entire family was classified as "white." The household comprised:
