Ireland and England

John was born in Banada, County Sligo, Ireland on November 7, 1857 to Bryan May and Bridget McGinty. John was baptized in Kilmactigue Parish in the diocese of Achonry on November 10, 1857 with godparents Michael McHugh and Ellen Gintty. Very shortly after his birth, the family moved out of Ireland to 108 Ingham Road, Dewsbury, Yorkshire, England where the May siblings would live until around 1880 when they set out to the United States of America.

Life in the US

In 1880, he met Mary McFadden and they married in Ohio in 1891 and had two children whom they lived with at 715 Burke St, Youngstown, Ohio in the 1900 US Census. He supported his family through masonry.

15 years later, on November 17, 1915, John died of acute cardiac dilation. His obituary from The Sunday Vindicator, while mostly accurate gives some unconfirmed/false details including his age at death and place of birth which are mentioned as 55 and Youngstown or a surrounding town, respectively. These should have been 58 and Banada, Ireland, respectively, though the age is a reasonable gap between concept and reality in this case so it makes sense and his father appears to have been a founding member of Youngstown so his own family or a reporter may, in the moment, have forgotten that he was not a natural born American. Besides those two details, everything else winds up nicely what could be discovered about his life in documents.
