Biography

Joseph May was a Mississippian.

Joseph Monroe May, son of John David May & Mary "Polly" Farley, was born in Mississippi in 1812.[1]

He homesteaded 324 acres in Jackson Parish, Louisiana.[1]

He married three times:
First, to Lucinda Pendarvis in 1838, in Mississippi. They had ten children:[1]

  3. William Robert
  4. Pinkney
  5. Berry
  6. Amanda
  7. John Calvin
  8. Harrietta
  9. Louisa A
  10. Joseph Harvey

He was twenty-four when he was counted on the census with Lucinda and six children in Jackson Parish, Louisiana in 1850.[2]

Second he married Catherine L. Smith-Hunter, after c.1855. They had two children: [1]

  1. Levi
  2. Rittie Ann

He married his third wife, Sarah Francis Kirkland-Meredith, on 26 Nov 1868 in Caldwell Parish Louisiana. They had four children:[1]

  1. Robert Matthew
  2. Irby Benjamin
  3. Obediah Doss
  4. Maudie Caladonia

These children are listed on the 1880 census with their father, Joseph and mother Sarah.[3]

"He was a well respected member of the community, a farmer, owned a grist mill and 'owned some fine horses'."[1]
