Biography

Marie Francoise Mayer was born sometime before 9 April 1776, the date of her baptism by the priest of St. James Church in present-day St. James Parish, Louisiana.[1]

She married Jean Miller, son of Jacob Miller and Anne Marie Thegein, on 19 January 1796 at St. Landry Catholic Church in Opelousas, Louisiana.[2]

Eighteen years later, she died while giving birth, and was buried on 28 September 1814 at the estimated age of 40 years.[3] The child, Emelie, was born on the 24th or 25th of September.[4] There is an August 7, 2000 church-issued transcription of the record of death for her on Findagrave, which gives her date of death as the 24th of September.[5] This may not be correct as, according to her daughter's baptism record made eight months later, her daughter Emelie was born on the 25th, as noted above. On the other hand, a death record would have been made closer in time to the actual events, so, assuming it was recorded within a day of her death, it would be considered more reliable than a document made eight months after the events.

A succession was filed in August 1823, listing her surviving children with Jean Miller.[6]

Her known children were:

  1. Marie Victoire (1797)
  2. Jean, fils (1799, a twin)
  3. Jacques (1799, a twin, not surviving to 1823)[7]
  4. Marie Cecile (1800, not surviving to 1823)
  5. Marie Celeste (1801)
  6. Andre Alexis (1803)
  7. Francois Xavier (1803)
  8. Marie Angelique (1805)
  9. Michel (1807)
  10. Ursin (1810)
  11. Etienne, baptized 26 July 1812 at age 2 mos.[8]
  12. Melitte (Emelie), b. 25 September 1814[4]
