James was born in 1859 in Alabama to R. L. and Clara Mayes. James married at least twice. His first wife was Lottie Lebuzan. They married in Alabama in 1881.[1] His second wife was Ida Lane. When he passed away in 1918, he was buried in the Oak City Cemetery, Bainbridge, Georgia. His grave lies between the graves of his two wives.[2]
