Biography

Lucy Elizabeth Mayfield was born in 1819 in Kentucky,[1] the second of eight children of James Mayfield and Mary Johnson. Lucy's father was a farmer and was a soldier in the Mexican War. They moved from Kentucky to Illinois and later to Missouri, locating in the Gasconade township of Laclede County, where her father farmed.[2] Her father died in 1849, her mother having died before that. The farm was then managed by Lucy's younger brother James, as the oldest son. In Oct 1850, Lucy was living on the farm with her brother James (listed in the 1850 census as Farmer), brothers John and William (listed as Laborers), and her sisters Sarah and Susanna. Her sisters Frances and Anna had already married and left home.[1] The next year, on 17 Apr 1851, Lucy married John J. Moser,[3] a widower farmer with a 10-year old son, Henry. John had a large farm in Smith township,[4][5] near today's Hazelgreen, Missouri, and John and Lucy's first child, James, was born about 1853. Two more children followed, Margaret in 1856 and John J. Jr. in 1859. Her daughter Margaret married in 1872 and had two children before Lucy died, so Lucy was able to enjoy a couple of grandchildren. Lucy passed away in 1878[6] and was buried in the farm's pasture. Unfortunately, vandals broke off the marble stone and carried it away so only the stone's unmarked base designates her grave today.
