Moses was born about 1830. He was the son of Presley Mayhew. He married Nancy (Hobbs or Honeycutt?) about 1848.
He passed away in 1863.
Civil War
Moses Mayhew enlisted as a Private in Company A, 4th Regiment North Carolina Infantry, on 11 July 1862[1], along with his brothers, Robert E. Mayhew and J. B. H. Mayhew. Moses was killed on the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg, 1 Jul 1863[1]. Robert E. Mayhew was captured by Union forces at Gettysburg and held until March 1865. J. B. H. Mayhew had previously been wounded at the Battle of Chancellorsville in May 1863 and did not return to service.
Of the Regiment it is said, “At Gettysburg he [Colonel Bryan Grimes] and his regiment were the first to enter the town, and they drove the enemy through Gettysburg to the heights beyond, capturing more prisoners than there were men in his command.”[2]. It was also said that the regiment lost 31% of it's 196 men at Gettysburg.[3]
